A BSGE funded project to improve the surgical management of uterine fibroids in the UK.

Primary Aims:

  1. To determine the proportion of women who have had a laparoscopic or open myomectomy and to assess whether this difference is by region or unit.
  2. Ascertain if there is regional variation to the laparoscopic management of uterine fibroids in England by region.
  3. Determine the proportion of abdominal myomectomies performed, both laparoscopic and open, for the management of uterine fibroids in 2017-2019.
  4. Evaluate if there is increased access to laparoscopic myomectomy in units with BSGE recognised endometriosis centres.

Secondary Aims:

  1. Ascertain the demographics of patients who underwent myomectomy in 2017-2019.
  2. Estimate how many open myomectomies could have potentially been performed laparoscopically looking at pre-operative criteria.
  3. Explore the differences between laparoscopic and open myomectomies in the following outcomes: length of stay, estimated blood loss, postoperative fever, and return to hospital.
  4. Ascertain surgeons’ knowledge and views on laparoscopic myomectomy

The data will be collected by a proforma that has already been created.

All trainees who collect data will be recognised in any subsequent publications (under the name of UKARCOG collaborative). The proformas will be sent to you directly by the research team if you are interested.
